🪔 Diwali, 8 November: give your parents a year of daily check-ins, $99 →

Your parent can live anywhere now, not only in India

From 29 September the parent’s country comes from their phone number: it sets the emergency number in every alert, the time zone, and whether the follow-up call reaches them.

What changed

We built the service for parents in India. Then families with a parent in Lahore, Dhaka, Dubai, Nairobi, Manila, Mexico City and Lisbon asked whether it would work there. It would have, badly: every alert said “call 112”, every time was India time, and the follow-up call did not know the country. Now the parent’s country comes from their phone number, and that decides three things: the emergency number quoted in alerts, the clock the check-in runs on, and whether our phone call reaches them.

Where the call reaches

The phone call works in 25 countries as of this post; elsewhere a missed check-in goes from the reminder straight to the family alert, and the site says so for each country on the worldwide page. Tests, refills and the chemist of record stay India-only, because they depend on partners on the ground.

A rule we wrote into the code

No line of copy a parent can receive may hard-code “112” or “India time”. The country table is the one source, and the site’s claims about countries are built from the same table, so the website cannot promise a number the product does not send.
