Caring for parents in India from Singapore: a daily plan
For Indians in Singapore: a 2.5-hour time gap, short flights, instant UPI–PayNow transfers and a daily WhatsApp check-in for parents in India.

What is different when you live in Singapore
Singapore is one of the easiest places from which to stay close to parents in India: the clocks are 2.5 hours apart and Chennai is about four hours away. Yet long working days mean the call often slips to the weekend.
A small daily signal fills that gap. It takes your parent one tap and takes you no time at all unless something is wrong.
The clock: when their morning happens for you
Singapore is 2.5 hours ahead of India all year.
| Where you are | Time difference | Their 8:00 AM check-in is your… | Good time for a live call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Singapore | 2.5 h | 10:30 AM the same day | Lunch break (their late morning) or after 8 PM (their early evening) |
Set up a daily signal, not a weekly call
A weekly call tells you how your parent sounded on Sunday. It tells you nothing about Tuesday. The signal you want every day is small: my parent is reachable, took their medicines, and is not feeling unwell.
From Singapore the check-in arrives mid-morning. You see the answer at your desk, and if your parent asks for a call you can ring them at lunch.
- Pick one fixed time in their morning, after they are normally up and before the day gets busy.
- Ask one question with buttons — "Yes, taken", "Not yet", "Please call me" — instead of asking them to type.
- Decide in advance what happens when there is no reply: a reminder, then a phone call, then a message to you, then a neighbour.
Build a local circle of two
Every parent who lives alone, or as a couple, needs at least two people nearby who can physically go to the door: a neighbour, a relative, the society manager, a trusted driver. Ask them plainly whether you may message them if your parent does not respond for a few hours, and save their WhatsApp numbers.
Weekend trips home are realistic from Singapore, but they are not an emergency plan. Two people who live near your parent are.
Time off work: what Singapore gives you
Singapore has no statutory parent-care leave for private-sector employees; the civil service and a number of larger employers offer it as a benefit. Most people use annual leave or ask for unpaid leave.
If you hold an Employment Pass or S Pass, a long stay in India needs a conversation with your employer about remote work and about keeping your pass valid.
Leave rules change and depend on your contract. Treat this as a starting point and confirm with HR before you book a ticket.
Money from Singapore
India’s UPI and Singapore’s PayNow have been linked since 2023, so small transfers between participating banks arrive in real time. For a hospital deposit, check your daily limit in advance and keep a float in India as well.
Many Indian banks now let NRE and NRO account holders use UPI with an international mobile number from a list of countries that has grown since 2023. If your bank offers it, you can pay a chemist, a lab or a hospital counter in India directly from your phone — ask your bank whether your number qualifies.
Health cover for your parents
MediShield Life and employer plans in Singapore do not cover parents who live in India.
Look at an Indian health policy in your parent’s own name. Since April 2024 the insurance regulator has removed the old upper age limit of 65 for buying a new policy, and the longest waiting period for existing illnesses is three years — so a policy bought now starts covering a known condition sooner than it used to. Parents aged 70 or over can also enrol for the government’s Ayushman Bharat senior-citizen cover in states that have joined the scheme.
When you have to fly
Non-stop flights reach Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kochi, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and several other cities in roughly 4 to 6 hours.
Singapore citizens and permanent residents of Indian origin usually travel on an OCI card or e-visa; Indian passport holders should keep both passport and pass in date.
Keep the medical basics in one place
- Current medicine list with strengths and timings — a photo of the latest prescription is a good start.
- The last 12 months of lab reports, in date order, so trends are visible.
- Blood group, allergies, main doctor, preferred hospital and its emergency number.
- A one-page emergency card you can send on WhatsApp in one tap.
How Athnova Care fits in
Your parent gets one WhatsApp message a day in their own language and answers with one tap. If they do not reply we remind them, then phone them. If they still do not answer we alert you, and then the local contacts you chose. Reports they photograph are read and trended, refills are arranged with your approval, and you get a doctor-ready summary every month. It costs $24 a month for the whole family, and your parent installs nothing.
Athnova Care tracks and coordinates. It does not diagnose, prescribe or replace a doctor, and it is not an emergency service.
Questions families ask
Does the check-in work in Tamil?
Yes. Your parent can receive and answer in Tamil, and the phone call that follows a missed check-in is in Tamil too.
How fast can I send money for a hospital bill?
Through the UPI–PayNow link, transfers between participating banks are near-instant within the daily limit. Keep a float in India for larger amounts.
Is there parent-care leave in Singapore?
Not as a legal right in the private sector. Check your employer’s family-care leave policy.
