What is different when you live in Canada

Canada has one of the fastest-growing Indian communities in the world, and many of its members arrived recently, with parents who are just reaching their seventies. The weekend call is the default — and it misses almost everything that happens between Monday and Saturday.

Whether you are a permanent resident, a citizen or on a work permit, the practical problem is the same: you are asleep during your parent’s morning, and at least a full day of travel away.

The clock: when their morning happens for you

India is 9.5 to 10.5 hours ahead of Toronto and 12.5 to 13.5 hours ahead of Vancouver, depending on daylight saving.

Set up a daily signal, not a weekly call

A weekly call tells you how your parent sounded on Sunday. It tells you nothing about Tuesday. The signal you want every day is small: my parent is reachable, took their medicines, and is not feeling unwell.

A check-in at 8:00 AM in India arrives in your evening. You see the answer the same night, and any follow-up call to your parent happens while you are awake.

Build a local circle of two

Every parent who lives alone, or as a couple, needs at least two people nearby who can physically go to the door: a neighbour, a relative, the society manager, a trusted driver. Ask them plainly whether you may message them if your parent does not respond for a few hours, and save their WhatsApp numbers.

In a Canadian winter a same-day flight is not always possible. Plan as if you will reach India on day three, and make sure two people nearby can cover the first 48 hours.

Time off work: what Canada gives you

Employment Insurance has caregiving benefits: the family caregiver benefit for adults (up to 15 weeks, for a critically ill or injured adult) and compassionate care benefits (up to 26 weeks, for end-of-life care). You need enough insurable hours and a medical certificate, and the person does not have to live in Canada.

Job-protected leave is set by your province or, for federally regulated workplaces, by the Canada Labour Code. The names and lengths differ, so check your province’s employment standards page.

Leave rules change and depend on your contract. Treat this as a starting point and confirm with HR before you book a ticket.

Money from Canada

Arrange access to funds in India ahead of time, and keep receipts for medical transfers. A small emergency float that a sibling can reach removes most of the panic from a hospital admission.

Many Indian banks now let NRE and NRO account holders use UPI with an international mobile number from a list of countries that has grown since 2023. If your bank offers it, you can pay a chemist, a lab or a hospital counter in India directly from your phone — ask your bank whether your number qualifies.

Health cover for your parents

Provincial health plans do not cover your parents in India. If you bring them to Canada on a Super Visa, private medical insurance that meets the programme’s minimum cover is a condition of the visa.

Look at an Indian health policy in your parent’s own name. Since April 2024 the insurance regulator has removed the old upper age limit of 65 for buying a new policy, and the longest waiting period for existing illnesses is three years — so a policy bought now starts covering a known condition sooner than it used to. Parents aged 70 or over can also enrol for the government’s Ayushman Bharat senior-citizen cover in states that have joined the scheme.

When you have to fly

Non-stop flights connect Toronto and Vancouver with Delhi in about 14 hours; from other cities you connect through Toronto, Europe or the Gulf. Plan for a full day of travel.

Canadian citizens need an OCI card or a visa for India. Keep both passports and cards in date.

How Athnova Care fits in

Your parent gets one WhatsApp message a day in their own language and answers with one tap. If they do not reply we remind them, then phone them. If they still do not answer we alert you, and then the local contacts you chose. Reports they photograph are read and trended, refills are arranged with your approval, and you get a doctor-ready summary every month. It costs $12 a month for the whole family, and your parent installs nothing.

Athnova Care tracks and coordinates. It does not diagnose, prescribe or replace a doctor, and it is not an emergency service.

Questions families ask

Do I need a Canadian service or an Indian one?

You need something that works in India on your parent’s phone and reports to you in Canada. WhatsApp check-ins do both.

Can I get EI caregiving benefits if my parent is in India?

The programme allows care for a family member outside Canada, subject to the usual eligibility rules and a medical certificate from their doctor. Confirm the details with Service Canada.

What time does the daily check-in arrive in Toronto?

An 8:00 AM India check-in is 10:30 PM in Toronto the evening before in summer, and 9:30 PM in winter.

Athnova Care tracks and coordinates care. It does not diagnose, prescribe or replace a doctor. In a medical emergency in India call 112.
