What is different when you live in Australia
Australia is the one major NRI destination that is ahead of India on the clock. Your working day overlaps with your parent’s morning, which makes a live call easy — and makes it tempting to rely on calls alone.
Calls depend on you remembering, on them picking up, and on them telling you the truth about how they feel. A daily one-tap check-in does not depend on any of those.
The clock: when their morning happens for you
Eastern Australia is 4.5 hours ahead of India in winter and 5.5 hours ahead during daylight saving. Perth is 2.5 hours ahead all year.
| Where you are | Time difference | Their 8:00 AM check-in is your… | Good time for a live call |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra | 4.5 h (winter) · 5.5 h (daylight saving) | 12:30 PM or 1:30 PM the same day | Your lunch break = their morning |
| Brisbane (no daylight saving) | 4.5 h all year | 12:30 PM | Your lunch break |
| Adelaide | 4 h · 5 h | 12:00 PM or 1:00 PM | Your lunch break |
| Perth | 2.5 h all year | 10:30 AM | Mid-morning or after work |
Set up a daily signal, not a weekly call
A weekly call tells you how your parent sounded on Sunday. It tells you nothing about Tuesday. The signal you want every day is small: my parent is reachable, took their medicines, and is not feeling unwell.
From Australia the check-in lands at lunchtime. If your parent taps "Please call me", you can ring them within the hour, in the middle of their morning.
- Pick one fixed time in their morning, after they are normally up and before the day gets busy.
- Ask one question with buttons — "Yes, taken", "Not yet", "Please call me" — instead of asking them to type.
- Decide in advance what happens when there is no reply: a reminder, then a phone call, then a message to you, then a neighbour.
Build a local circle of two
Every parent who lives alone, or as a couple, needs at least two people nearby who can physically go to the door: a neighbour, a relative, the society manager, a trusted driver. Ask them plainly whether you may message them if your parent does not respond for a few hours, and save their WhatsApp numbers.
Flights from Australia are long and not always daily to your parent’s city. The local circle covers the first day; you cover the days after.
Time off work: what Australia gives you
Under the National Employment Standards, full-time employees get 10 days of paid personal/carer’s leave a year (pro rata for part-time), which can be used to care for an immediate family member who is ill or facing an emergency. There are also 2 days of unpaid carer’s leave per occasion and 2 days of compassionate leave.
A parent counts as immediate family. Your employer can ask for evidence, such as a medical certificate from the treating doctor in India.
Leave rules change and depend on your contract. Treat this as a starting point and confirm with HR before you book a ticket.
Money from Australia
Keep an emergency fund in India that a relative can use without waiting for you, and test your transfer route once in a calm week.
Many Indian banks now let NRE and NRO account holders use UPI with an international mobile number from a list of countries that has grown since 2023. If your bank offers it, you can pay a chemist, a lab or a hospital counter in India directly from your phone — ask your bank whether your number qualifies.
Health cover for your parents
Medicare does not cover your parents in India. If they visit you in Australia, arrange overseas visitor health cover for the trip — some visa types require it.
Look at an Indian health policy in your parent’s own name. Since April 2024 the insurance regulator has removed the old upper age limit of 65 for buying a new policy, and the longest waiting period for existing illnesses is three years — so a policy bought now starts covering a known condition sooner than it used to. Parents aged 70 or over can also enrol for the government’s Ayushman Bharat senior-citizen cover in states that have joined the scheme.
When you have to fly
Non-stop flights link Sydney and Melbourne with Delhi, and on some days with Mumbai and Bengaluru, in about 12 to 13 hours. From Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth most routes connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or another Australian city.
Australian citizens need an OCI card or an e-visa for India. Check the expiry dates today.
Keep the medical basics in one place
- Current medicine list with strengths and timings — a photo of the latest prescription is a good start.
- The last 12 months of lab reports, in date order, so trends are visible.
- Blood group, allergies, main doctor, preferred hospital and its emergency number.
- A one-page emergency card you can send on WhatsApp in one tap.
How Athnova Care fits in
Your parent gets one WhatsApp message a day in their own language and answers with one tap. If they do not reply we remind them, then phone them. If they still do not answer we alert you, and then the local contacts you chose. Reports they photograph are read and trended, refills are arranged with your approval, and you get a doctor-ready summary every month. It costs $12 a month for the whole family, and your parent installs nothing.
Athnova Care tracks and coordinates. It does not diagnose, prescribe or replace a doctor, and it is not an emergency service.
Questions families ask
Is the time difference with India a problem from Australia?
Less than from the Americas or Europe. Your working day overlaps with their morning, so calls and quick decisions are easier.
Can I use carer’s leave for a parent overseas?
The entitlement is about caring for an immediate family member; it is not limited by where they live. Your employer may ask for evidence.
Do my parents need to install anything?
No. They reply on WhatsApp with one tap, and get a phone call if they do not reply.
