Visiting parents in India: a health checklist for your trip
Two weeks at home is your best chance to set things up: doctor visits, a medicine review, home safety, documents and the people who help after you leave.

Treat the visit as a working trip
A visit home fills up fast — relatives, functions, shopping. Block three or four half-days before you land, and tell your parents why. Most of what follows cannot be done from abroad, or takes ten times longer.
Before you fly
- Book the doctor’s appointment and any yearly tests for your first week, so results are back before you leave.
- Ask a sibling what they have noticed since the last visit.
- Carry a good upper-arm BP monitor or a glucometer if theirs is old.
- List what you want to check in the house.
Week one: the medical side
- Go to the doctor with them. Take the old reports and ask which medicines are still needed.
- Photograph every strip and the latest prescription, and write one clean medicine list.
- Clear out expired and stopped medicines. Old strips cause double dosing.
- Get the tests done, collect reports and file them by date.
- Eye and hearing checks, and a dental visit — they are easy to put off and they affect falls, isolation and eating.
Week one: the house
- Bathroom: anti-skid mats, grab bars, a stool, a night light on the way.
- Remove loose rugs and trailing wires; fix uneven steps.
- Check the gas stove, the geyser and the inverter.
- Put emergency numbers on the fridge in large print.
- Give a spare key to a neighbour.
Week two: people and paperwork
- Meet the two neighbours or relatives who will be your local contacts. Thank them, and save their numbers.
- Meet the local chemist and ask whether they deliver.
- Check the insurance policy: renewal date, sum insured, nearest cashless hospitals.
- Make sure bank accounts and policies have a nominee.
- Set up the daily check-in together, so your parent sees the first message while you are still there.
Teach one thing on the phone
Pick the single most useful skill — answering a video call, sending a photo on WhatsApp, or making the text larger — and practise it every day of your visit. One habit that sticks is worth more than ten that are shown once.
Before you leave
Write down what you changed, and send it to your siblings. Book the next doctor’s appointment. Agree a time for the daily check-in. Then go to the function.
Questions families ask
How long should I plan for health tasks on a two-week visit?
Three to four half-days cover a doctor visit, tests, a medicine review and the house. Spread them across the first week.
Should I change my parent’s medicines during the visit?
No. Take your questions to their doctor, and let the doctor decide.
