Three kinds of help
Elder care for families abroad falls into three groups, and they solve different problems. Most disappointment comes from buying one kind and expecting another.
- Care-manager services with people on the ground: home visits, hospital accompaniment, emergency response.
- Health-record and reminder apps that the parent installs and uses.
- Check-in desks that work over WhatsApp and phone calls, and arrange tests and refills with your approval.

Care-manager services
Emoha and Samarth are the best-known. As published on their websites in September 2026, Emoha’s plans ranged from ₹1,999 to ₹10,999 a month and Samarth’s care plans from about ₹10,999 to ₹16,999 a month. They suit families who need regular in-person visits, company for hospital trips or complex care. Ask about coverage in your parent’s city, who actually visits, and what "emergency response" includes.
Apps
Record and reminder apps are often free and well designed. They depend on the parent installing, opening and typing into an app every day, which many older parents stop doing after a few weeks — and when entries stop, nobody follows up.
WhatsApp check-in desks
A daily message the parent answers with a tap, a phone call if they go quiet, and alerts to family. Athnova Care costs $12 a month for the whole family. It suits parents who are independent but live alone or as a couple, where the main worry is "we would not know if something happened". It does not replace in-person nursing care.
How to choose
- Does your parent need hands-on help at home? Choose a care-manager or home-care service.
- Is the main worry that nobody would notice? A daily check-in desk covers that for much less.
- Many families combine the two: a daily check-in all year, and a nurse, attendant or care manager when needed.
Questions families ask
Is Athnova Care a replacement for a care manager?
No. It covers daily monitoring, alerts and coordination. If your parent needs regular hands-on care, use a care-manager or nursing service as well.
Which elder care service is best for NRIs?
It depends on what your parent needs. For hands-on help, a care-manager service; for a daily safety signal, a check-in desk; many families use both.
