Free daily check-in calls for seniors living alone (US, UK, Canada, Australia)

US telephone reassurance, sheriff "Are you OK?" calls, Red Cross Telecross, UK friendship lines: free daily calls for older people, and who qualifies.

What a daily check-in call is

A daily check-in call rings at the same time every day. Your parent answers, says or presses that they are all right, and that is it. If they do not answer, someone acts: the caller tries again, then contacts family, a neighbour or, in some programmes, sends someone round.

Several countries have free versions run by local government, police or charities. They are worth knowing about — and worth comparing honestly with paid services, because eligibility, languages and what happens after a missed call differ a lot.

United States: telephone reassurance and "Are you OK?" programmes

United Kingdom: friendship lines and local befriending

Australia: Red Cross Telecross

Canada: start with 211

Telephone assurance and friendly-calling programmes in Canada are run by local community agencies, so they differ from city to city. 211 (free, confidential, and in many provinces open 24 hours) can tell you what is available where your parent lives. In Toronto, the Toronto Seniors Helpline is 416-217-2077.

When a free programme is not enough

A free programme and a family check-in can also work together: the programme for a human voice, the check-in for a signal you can see.

Questions to ask any daily-call service

Questions families ask

Are there free daily check-in calls for seniors?

Yes, in some places: telephone reassurance programmes in many US counties, sheriff "Are you OK?" programmes, Red Cross Telecross in Australia and local befriending services in the UK and Canada. Eligibility and availability vary by area.

How do I find a telephone reassurance programme in the US?

Call the Eldercare Locator on 1-800-677-1116 (Monday to Friday) or search "telephone reassurance" with your parent's county name.

Is the Silver Line a daily check-in?

No. It is a free friendship line your parent can call any time. Nobody is alerted if they do not call.

Is Athnova Care free?

For one parent, the daily WhatsApp check-in, the reminder and the family alert are free with no time limit. Daily phone calls, the neighbour step, medicine reminders and summaries are in the full plan, $12 a month for the whole family after 14 free days.

Does the daily call work on a landline?

Yes. Athnova Care's daily call works on any phone, including a landline, in the 25 countries our calls reach.
