Two different jobs
A care manager is a person who visits. A check-in is a system that asks every day. One is deep and occasional; the other is light and constant. The question is not which is better but which gap you are trying to close.
What a daily check-in does well
- Tells you every day that your parent is reachable and took their medicines.
- Notices silence within hours and escalates to phone calls, family and neighbours.
- Collects readings and reports without an app.
- Keeps every sibling informed at once.
- Costs far less than regular home visits.
What a care manager does well
- Visits in person and notices what a message cannot: the state of the kitchen, a limp, a new bruise.
- Goes with your parent to hospital and speaks to the doctor.
- Arranges and supervises nurses, physiotherapists and attendants.
- Deals with the plumber, the bank and the society office.
Which one, when
| Situation | Better fit |
|---|---|
| Independent parents, living alone or as a couple | Daily check-in |
| Parent recovering from surgery | Both, for the first months |
| Parent with dementia | Care manager or home care; check-in for the carer |
| No relatives or neighbours nearby at all | Care manager |
| Several siblings who want to share updates | Daily check-in |
What each one costs
Published care-manager plans from well-known Indian services ranged from about ₹1,999 to ₹16,999 a month in September 2026, usually billed quarterly or yearly, with the number of visits depending on the plan. Athnova Care is $12 a month, or $99 a year, for up to two parents and four family members. Tests, medicines and consultations are extra with both, paid to whoever provides them.
A way to decide in ten minutes
- Write down the last three times you were worried about your parent.
- For each, ask: would a person visiting that week have prevented it, or would knowing on the same day have been enough?
- If most answers are "knowing", start with a daily check-in.
- If most are "someone needed to be there", start with a care manager or home care.
What neither replaces
- A doctor who knows your parent.
- Two people nearby who can reach the house.
- Your own calls and visits.
Combine them
Use the daily check-in as the always-on layer and book a nurse, physiotherapist or attendant only when needed. When the check-in shows a bad week, you know it is time for a visit.
Questions families ask
Is a WhatsApp check-in enough for a parent living alone?
For a parent who is independent and has two people nearby who can respond, it covers the main risk — that nobody would notice. It is not enough for a parent who needs physical help.
How much does a care manager cost in India?
Published plans from well-known services ranged from about ₹1,999 to ₹16,999 a month in September 2026.
Can a daily check-in tell me when a visit is needed?
Often, yes. A run of "not yet" answers, missed check-ins or messages that your parent is unwell is a sign to arrange a visit or a doctor’s appointment.
