I’m Alive app vs Athnova Care: a tap in an app, or a message and a call?
I’m Alive asks your parent to tap an app each day; Athnova Care sends the question on WhatsApp or by phone. Plans and prices as published in October 2026.

The short answer
I’m Alive is a personal-safety app for people who live alone: your parent taps "I’m okay" in the app every day, the phone’s own activity (unlocks, charging, movement) can count as a sign of life, and contacts are alerted by push, email and SMS when a check-in is missed. Athnova Care turns it round: the question goes to your parent every morning — a WhatsApp message with three buttons, or a phone call where they press 1 — in their language, and silence is followed by a reminder, a call, the whole family and a neighbour. I’m Alive suits a parent who lives with their smartphone and would rather not be asked anything. Athnova Care suits a parent who would rather answer than remember, does not use apps, does not read English, or has no smartphone at all.
Side by side
| I’m Alive | Athnova Care | |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts the check-in | Your parent: they tap "I’m okay" in the app (phone activity can stand in for the tap on paid plans) | We do: a WhatsApp message or a phone call arrives at the time you choose |
| What your parent needs | A smartphone (iPhone or Android) with the I’m Alive app | WhatsApp on any phone, or any phone at all — even a landline — for the daily call |
| When a check-in is missed | Reminders, then contacts are notified by push, email and SMS, optionally with location | A reminder after about three hours, a phone call in their language where our call reaches, then every family member, then a neighbour or relative |
| Contacts | One on the free plan; up to ten on Protect Me | Up to four family members in the app, plus local contacts |
| Languages | Not stated on its website (English) | 21 for your parent, 7 for the family app |
| Health records | Not listed | Medicines taken or not, BP and sugar photos read and charted, lab reports with trends, a monthly summary |
| Fall detection | Phone-based, on iPhone, on Protect Me (with an Apple Watch for a phone in a pocket) | None — the check-in notices silence, not falls; a parent can send SOS at any time |
| Published price (October 2026) | Free forever: unlimited daily check-ins, 1 contact, 1 alert a month. Protect Me $29.99 a year; Premium Plus $39.99 a year | Free plan for one parent; full plan $12 a month or $99 a year for two parents and four family members, 14-day trial, no card |

When I’m Alive is the better fit
- Your parent uses a smartphone all day and likes the idea of a two-second tap, or of not being asked anything at all.
- You want the alert to carry their location.
- You want phone-based fall detection on an iPhone or Apple Watch.
- Price matters most: its paid plan costs about $2.50 a month.
When Athnova Care is the better fit
- Your parent will not remember to open an app, or has no smartphone: the question comes to them on WhatsApp or as a plain phone call.
- They are more at ease in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Spanish, Arabic, Turkish or another language than in English.
- You want silence followed up by a voice — a reminder and a call — before anyone is alarmed.
- You want the whole family and a neighbour in the loop, not just one contact.
- You also want to keep track of medicines, readings and reports, and share them with the doctor.
The honest limits of each
A check-in your parent has to start depends on a habit they keep for years; passive phone activity helps, but a phone that is charging on a table can look busy while its owner is not. A check-in that is sent to them depends on them hearing the phone or seeing the message, which is why both follow silence up. Neither replaces an emergency number: if you think your parent is in danger, call the one where they live.
Questions families ask
Is the I’m Alive app free?
Its website lists a free-forever plan with unlimited daily check-ins, one emergency contact and one alert a month; Protect Me is $29.99 a year. Athnova Care has a free plan for one parent, and the full plan is $12 a month for the whole family.
What is a good I’m Alive alternative for a parent without a smartphone?
A check-in that comes to them: Athnova Care's WhatsApp message with buttons, or its daily phone call that works on any phone, including a landline.
Does Athnova Care need an app on my parent's phone?
No. Your parent uses the WhatsApp they already have, or simply answers a phone call. Only the family uses the app.
Which one works for parents in India?
Both can be used there. I’m Alive needs your parent to use its app; Athnova Care works on the WhatsApp your parent already has, in Hindi or nine other Indian languages, and quotes 112 in its alerts.
