Why families look for a Snug alternative
Snug Safety is a good free app, and for an independent senior in the United States with a smartphone it is often the first thing to try. Its website (October 2026) describes the model: the person opens the app and taps once a day; if they miss, the free plan texts their emergency contacts with their last location, and the paid Dispatch plan ($12.50 a month or $149.99 a year as listed on its page) adds a dispatcher who calls them and their contacts and, if nobody can confirm they are okay, coordinates a wellness check with local responders.
Families look elsewhere for a handful of reasons: the parent has no smartphone or will not open an app every day; the parent lives outside the United States; the parent is more at ease in another language; or the family wants the parent to be called — and a neighbour asked — before anyone in uniform is involved.
The alternatives, side by side
| Alternative | Best if your parent… | How they check in | Published price |
|---|---|---|---|
| County telephone reassurance (many US counties) | lives in the US and would like a person to follow up | Answers a morning call from the sheriff’s office, police or volunteers | Free; ask the county or the Eldercare Locator (800-677-1116) |
| Iamfine | has a landline or any phone and wants nothing to install | Answers an automated call once or twice a day, or calls in | $14.99 a month or $120 a year; 14 days free, no card |
| ConfirmOk | wants a plain “press 1” call | Answers an automated call and presses 1 and # | 5-day free trial; third-party comparisons (July 2026) listed $14.99 a month or $149 a year |
| CheckinBee | texts happily | Replies YES or OK to a daily text | Family $13 a month; Family Plus $20 a month; 14 days free, no card |
| AloneAssist | would enjoy a short daily chat | Talks with a conversational AI on a morning call; the family gets a recap | 14 days free; a trade publication listed $14.99 a month or $120 a year at launch |
| KinStatus | has an Android phone and likes buttons | Taps “I’m OK”, “Call me” or “I need help” in an app | In-app purchases; a third-party listing describes a 30-day trial |
| AyoCheck | lives in Australia and uses WhatsApp or LINE | Taps once on a WhatsApp or LINE message (English, Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese) | A$14.99 a month for up to 3 people; 7-day trial |
| Athnova Care | lives anywhere with WhatsApp, or speaks one of 21 languages | Taps one button on a WhatsApp message in their language, or presses 1 on a daily call (in 25 countries) | Free for one parent (WhatsApp check-in, reminder, family alerts); full plan $12 a month or $99 a year for the whole family, 14 days free, no card |

Pick by the reason you are leaving Snug
- No smartphone, or forgets to open the app: a daily call (Iamfine, ConfirmOk, a county reassurance call) or a text (CheckinBee).
- Lonely as much as at risk: AloneAssist’s conversation call, or a county programme with volunteer callers.
- Lives in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Mexico, Nigeria, Europe or the Gulf, or prefers another language: Athnova Care — the check-in, the reminder and the follow-up call all come in their language, and the alert quotes their country’s emergency number.
- Lives in Australia and speaks Chinese or Japanese: AyoCheck.
- Your family wants a neighbour to knock before a wellness check: Athnova Care asks the neighbour or relative you nominated (full plan); Snug Dispatch and some county programmes end in local responders.
- Happy with Snug but wants more than one check-in a day: Snug Dispatch lists up to three.
What Snug does well
A free plan with no time limit, a check-in the senior controls, and — on Dispatch — a professional who calls before anyone is sent. For a US senior who likes apps, that is hard to beat, and we say so on our side-by-side page. The alternatives above are for the parents it does not fit.
Questions families ask
Is there a free alternative to Snug Safety?
Yes: county telephone reassurance programmes in many US counties, and Athnova Care’s free plan for one parent (a daily WhatsApp check-in, a reminder and family alerts, with no time limit). Most automated-call services charge about $13 to $15 a month after a trial.
Which Snug alternative works without a smartphone?
Iamfine, ConfirmOk and county reassurance calls work on any phone, including a landline; CheckinBee works on any phone that texts; Athnova Care’s daily phone call (full plan) works on any phone in 25 countries.
Does Snug work for a parent in India or another country?
Snug describes a US service. For a parent in another country, or one who speaks another language, Athnova Care sends the check-in on WhatsApp in 21 languages, wherever the parent lives.
Which alternative calls my parent if they miss a check-in?
Snug Dispatch, Iamfine and ConfirmOk retry by phone; Athnova Care’s full plan phones the parent in their language before alerting the family and a neighbour.
