Daily check-in in Urdu for your parents (اردو)
Daily WhatsApp check-ins and calls in Urdu for your parents, wherever they live. See the exact messages they get and the replies they can give.
Urdu is read by parents in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad, and by millions more in Hyderabad, Lucknow, Bhopal and Aligarh. A check-in in Urdu script that opens with "Assalam o alaikum" reads like a message from the family.
Many parents type in Roman Urdu, and those replies are understood too. The phone call is in Hindustani: spoken Urdu and Hindi sound the same, and the call uses a Hindi-Urdu voice.
What your parent sees, in Urdu
These are the real messages, exactly as they are sent. The English under each one is for you; your parent sees only the Urdu.
If they do not answer
About three hours later your parent gets a gentle reminder in Urdu. In the countries our phone call reaches — 25 countries, including India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar — a phone call in Urdu (spoken in Hindustani by a Hindi-Urdu voice) follows. If there is still no answer, you are alerted, and then the local contacts you chose. Which countries, and their emergency numbers →
Once a week
Replies in their own words
Parents do not always use the buttons. These everyday replies, typed the way people type them, are understood:
| Your parent types | Understood as |
|---|---|
| le li | I have taken them |
| ji, le li | yes, taken |
| abhi nahi | not yet |
| tabiyat theek nahi | I am not well |
| فون کریں | please call (in Urdu script) |
Words that suggest an emergency — a fall, chest pain, breathlessness, in Urdu or in English — are recognised too. You are alerted at once and your parent is reminded to call the emergency number of the country they live in.
Where Urdu is spoken
Urdu is spoken in Pakistan, where it is the national language, and across India — Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, Delhi, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
