Daily check-in in German for your parents (Deutsch)
Daily WhatsApp check-ins and calls in German for your parents, wherever they live. See the exact messages they get and the replies they can give.
Grown children move to Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Zurich, London or New York while their parents stay in the town where they built their lives. WhatsApp is how German families talk every day, and many parents in their seventies and eighties use it as naturally as the phone.
The check-in uses "Sie", as one speaks to an elder, and a single tap answers it. It is not a Hausnotruf button: it asks every day, so a quiet day is noticed even when nobody can press anything.
What your parent sees, in German
These are the real messages, exactly as they are sent. The English under each one is for you; your parent sees only the German.
If they do not answer
About three hours later your parent gets a gentle reminder in German. In the countries our phone call reaches — 25 countries, including India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar — a phone call in German follows. If there is still no answer, you are alerted, and then the local contacts you chose. Which countries, and their emergency numbers →
Once a week
Replies in their own words
Parents do not always use the buttons. These everyday replies, typed the way people type them, are understood:
| Your parent types | Understood as |
|---|---|
| schon genommen | I have taken them |
| ja, genommen | yes, taken |
| noch nicht | not yet |
| mir geht es nicht gut | I am not feeling well |
| ruf mich an | please call |
Words that suggest an emergency — a fall, chest pain, breathlessness, in German or in English — are recognised too. You are alerted at once and your parent is reminded to call the emergency number of the country they live in.
Where German is spoken
German is spoken in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and South Tyrol.
Families abroad
German-speaking families with a parent far away live mainly in other German cities, Switzerland, Austria, the UK, the US, Spain and Scandinavia.
Your parent can live in almost any country: the check-in, the alerts and the emergency card quote the emergency number of the country they live in. Tests and medicine refills are arranged in India only. Parents outside India →
Questions families ask
Can my parent reply in German?
Yes. They can tap the buttons, which are in German, or type or speak in their own words. Replies in German, including replies mixed with English, are understood.
Is the phone call also in German?
Yes, in the countries our phone call reaches: 25 countries, including India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Elsewhere the WhatsApp reminder is in German, and if it is not answered you are alerted straight away.
Can each parent have a different language?
Yes. The language is set for each parent, and you can change it at any time.
Which language does the family app use?
English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic or Indonesian — you choose. The family app is for you; your parent only uses WhatsApp and their phone.
