Daily check-in in Italian for your parents (Italiano)

Daily WhatsApp check-ins and calls in Italian for your parents, wherever they live. See the exact messages they get and the replies they can give.

About six million Italian citizens are registered as living abroad — in London, Berlin, Paris, Zurich, Buenos Aires and New York — and many more young Italians have moved north for work, while their parents stay in Naples, Palermo, Bari or a small town in the hills. Italy has one of the oldest populations in Europe, and WhatsApp is how its families stay in touch.

The check-in uses "Lei", as one speaks to an elder, and avoids words that change with gender, so it reads right for a mother or a father.

What your parent sees, in Italian

These are the real messages, exactly as they are sent. The English under each one is for you; your parent sees only the Italian.

In the countries our phone call reaches — 25 countries, including India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar — a phone call in Italian follows. If there is still no answer, you are alerted, and then the local contacts you chose. Which countries, and their emergency numbers →

Replies in their own words

Parents do not always use the buttons. These everyday replies, typed the way people type them, are understood:

Your parent typesUnderstood as
già preseI have taken them
sì, preseyes, taken
non ancoranot yet
non mi sento beneI am not feeling well
chiamatemiplease call

Words that suggest an emergency — a fall, chest pain, breathlessness, in Italian or in English — are recognised too. You are alerted at once and your parent is reminded to call the emergency number of the country they live in.

Where Italian is spoken

Italian is spoken in Italy, San Marino, Ticino in Switzerland, and Italian communities in Argentina, Brazil, the US and Australia.

Families abroad

Italian families with a parent far away live mainly in the UK, Germany, Switzerland, France, Spain, the US and the north of Italy.

Your parent can live in almost any country: the check-in, the alerts and the emergency card quote the emergency number of the country they live in. Tests and medicine refills are arranged in India only. Parents outside India →

Questions families ask

Can my parent reply in Italian?

Yes. They can tap the buttons, which are in Italian, or type or speak in their own words. Replies in Italian, including replies mixed with English, are understood.

Is the phone call also in Italian?

Yes, in the countries our phone call reaches: 25 countries, including India, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Elsewhere the WhatsApp reminder is in Italian, and if it is not answered you are alerted straight away.

Can each parent have a different language?

Yes. The language is set for each parent, and you can change it at any time.

Which language does the family app use?

English, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Arabic or Indonesian — you choose. The family app is for you; your parent only uses WhatsApp and their phone.
